Our friends from the station volunteer groups at Hindley and Eccles have arranged special events to link up with the celebrations at Walkden !

FRECCLES – the cheerily-named Friends of Eccles station – are walking along the cycle path from Monton Green to the gala at Walkden. See http://www.salfordonline.com/localnews.php?func=viewdetails&vdetails=19623 or contact info@freccles.org.uk for more details.

Meanwhile the Friends of Hindley Station have organised for FOLK BAND “Two Blokes Playing Guitar” to play on the 1209 train from Victoria (calling at Walkden at 1229). From Walkden the music train continues to Hindley and Wigan. The musicians then travelback  from Wigan to Hindley where they will play for an hour on the platform( from 1322 until 1422), then  board the train back to Manchester, calling at Walkden 1439.

The band are playing on normal, scheduled trains and the usual range of tickets and fares apply – there’s no extra price for travelling on the music trains !

Friends of Hindley have made great improvements to their station recently and this is a great chance to see fruits of their labour with the band playing for  extra interest.

Northern Rail will run the service for a 1-year trial period with funding provided by Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority (GMITA).

Nine trains will run per day in each direction, calling all stations at the following times.

  1. This is great news but i think the service finishes 2 soon don’t forget football in manchester may not start until 4pm and cricket at Old Trafford dosn’t finish until 6pm. A more suitable timetable should run between 10am and 10pm don’t forget if u can’t come home on the train there’s no point in going onit.

  2. As a cricket fan too I would definitely agree with you Michael. The extent of the service is limited by the subsidy GMITA can afford – but if the year’s trial proves to be popular we hope the service would be enhanced in future.

  3. I live in Atherton and at Atherton station there is no publicity whatsoever about the new Sunday service apart from our local councillor mentioning it in her newsletter. I have raised the lack of awareness in Atherton with GMPTE/Northern Rail/the local councillor as the success of the Sunday opening depends on passenger numbers from ALL stations on the line.

    Good luck with your festivities.

  4. I’ll immediately grab your rss as I can’t find your email subscription link or newsletter service. Do you have any? Kindly let me know in order that I could subscribe. Thanks.

  5. Sorry we’re not very feed literate here at FOWS but I understand the blog should be available as an RSS feed if you just put /feed on the end of the URL – i.e. https://walkdenstation.wordpress.com/feed
Would you let us know if that works for you ?
