Walkden art work complete – installation will be soon

April 22, 2017

Artist Mark Mennell has completed production of the art work for Walkden station and we are now just waiting for an installation date to be agreed with Northern (who are very kindly installing the work for free).

We look forward to announcing the actual installation date very soon and hope all station users will enjoy the 10 lovely pieces that Mark has designed for us.

Walkden station artworks … a sneak preview

April 1, 2017

We are delighted to offer a sneak preview of a couple of the draft designs that artist Mark Mennell has produced for FoWS.

The designs form part of a series of 8 steel panels that will be attached to the walls of the stairway at the station.

We think the designs, produced by Mark in collaboration with Art & Design students at Salford City College are gorgeous and can’t wait to see them installed – hopefully in the not too distant future.

The Walkden station art project has been made possible with generous financial assistance from Salford City Council‘s Community Committee and Recycle/Reward programmes, and Arriva Rail North‘s Community Rail programme.

Service improvements from December this year and May next year

March 18, 2017

ARNlogoFoWS have obtained details from northern about the introduction of increased service frequencies as promised in the Arriva franchise contract.

Unfortunately delays to engineering projects in the south have had a knock-on effect on the availability of extra trains for northern so many of the improvements planned for December this year have been deferred 6 months.

However, we are pleased to confirm that our suggestion that Sunday improvements could start without the additional trains being ready has been accepted and thus:

  • From Dec’ 2017 Walkden will have an improved Sunday service with 2 trains per hour (tph) in each direction from 8am to 6pm and an hourly service until 10pm
  • In May 2018 all other services changes:
      • 4 tph (each direction) during the daytime and 2 tph evening
      • All services will continue to serve Victoria as now, but many will continue beyond Victoria including:
        • 1 tph Southport to Leeds via Brighouse
        • 1 Southport to Burnley/Blackburn via Todmorden
        • 1 Kirkby-Rochdale

By the of end 2019 all Pacer trains should be withdrawn from service and all northern trains will either be new or refurbished.

This Wednesday evening (15th March)  FoWS hold our AGM for 2017, and you can find the agenda attached here
The meeting starts at 7.30pm and please note we are meeting in the Walkden Gateway Centre rather than our usual venue (the Legion Club).
Our guest speaker is Vicky Cropper who joined northern last year as Community and Sustainability Manager for the Central Region, and Vicky will be telling us about northern’s achievements and plans in the community rail arena.
The meeting is open to all members of the public with an interest in the on-going development of Walkden station.

Very reduced service tomorrow – Monday 13th March

March 12, 2017

Due to strike action by the RMT protesting about proposals for Driver-Only Operated trains, a severely restricted timetable will operate to/from Walkden tomorrow, with just one train an hour from around 7.30am to 6.30pm, and no trains at all outside these times.

Moreover, these services are likely to be extremely busy and it’s quite possible little or no space will be available for Walkden passengers on peak hour services.

See the northern website for full details and latest updates about the disruption.
