Timetable changes start tomorrow

Northern’s Winter Timetable comes into effect tomorrow (Sunday 11th Dec)

The booklet has a new look but – at first glance – changes to train times are minimal

However, we haven’t checked all times and your usual train may have been moved … please check before travelling:




Northern’s new “Travel Safe” team

December 10, 2016

Northern have introduced a 55-strong “Travel Safe” team to augment existing on board staff.

The team will be based in Newcastle, Preston, Bradford and Manchester, and support everyday network activity, late night services, special events and sporting fixtures.

All team members will be accredited under the British Transport Police’s nationally recognised Rail Safety Accreditation Scheme (RSAS).

Car park plan revealed for Walkden station

stationcarparknews002We were delighted with the confirmation this week that Salford City Council have agreed to make the old council depot site on Chestnut Lane available to TfGM as a dedicated station car and bicycle park.

With the disruption caused to our neighbours by on-street parking, and the ever increasing problem of congestion-related pollution, we believe this is great news for passengers and residents alike.

FoWS have been working with TfGM and local councillors to bring this to fruition, and we want to say a huge “Thank You” to everyone who’s helped to make it happen.

Keeping public land in public ownership and utilising it for public good is not an easy trick to pull off these days, so a special thank you to City Mayor Paul Dennett, Walkden councillors Richard Critchley, Iain Lindley, and Roger Jones, and Owain Roberts from the Rail Team at TfGM !


Passenger count records first big drop in 10 years

December 3, 2016

FOWS’s annual Passenger Count was held on Thursday 17th November and revealed a significant (25%) decline from 683 to 506 people boarding or alighting at the station from the start of services until 13:30.

Weather conditions and service reliability were good on the day, and we believe the unprecedented downturn is a result of passengers in southern Walkden and Ellenbrook migrating to the new Guided Busway.


Peak/Off-Peak and Inbound/Outbound Trends

The drop in patronage was fairly evenly distributed across all time slots and directions of travel.


Bucking the trend of recent weeks, punctuality was good with only 3 of the 31 trains more than 4 minutes late.


Short forming the 0757 to Manchester (running 2 carriages instead of the usual 4) led to delays and severe over-crowding on this and the following service, however all passengers were able to board.
