Walkden from above

November 17, 2015

Thanks to FoWS member Mike Corless for this unusual view of the station taken from the tower of St Paul’s church.

It’s striking how green this part of Walkden appears when seen from above street level … you might think we live in the middle of a forest !

Crowds welcome steam special at Walkden

November 1, 2015

Dozens of people turned out at Walkden to enjoy the rare sight of a steam train passing through the station this morning, in what we believe was the first visit of a “steamer” to Walkden since the final days of mainline steam on BR in 1967.

The misty morning only seemed to add to the atmosphere as “The Tin Bath” enthusiasts special, headed by two gleaming “Black 5’s”, was diverted via Walkden due to the over-running Farnworth tunnel engineering work.
