There’s a rare treat for for steam fans as a steam special will pass through Walkden tomorrow (Sunday 1st Nov).

It’s an enthusiasts’ special called “The Tin Bath” and is schedule to pass through Walkden towards Manchester at 0951 in the morning behind two large “Black 5” locomotives.

Winter flowers planted at Walkden

October 25, 2015

FoWS volunteers have been cutting back plants that have died down and installing some colourful cyclamen and pansies to brighten up the station gardens over winter.

As always, we want to publicly thank Salford City Council‘s Community Committee In Bloom scheme for their financial support which makes the upkeep of the station gardens possible.

Extra Walkden trains added to the autumn timetable

October 7, 2015

Some great news about several extra services included in the timetable that started this week:

  • Mon-Fri: there is now a 2238 direct from Manchester Piccadilly to Walkden. This runs in addition to the 2245 and 2320 departures from Victoria
  • Saturdays: Every hour one of the Southport-Manchester Airport trains diverted via Walkden because of the Farnworth tunnel works will be making a stop at Walkden, meaning there’s now a third train per hour to/from Manchester on Saturdays. This is probably the highest ever frequency of service that Walkden has enjoyed

Needless to say these are very welcome additions to our service and – even if they only turn out to be temporary while the Farnworth diversions are in place – we’re sure people will be only too pleased to take advantage of the extra seats and directly served destinations

Extra carriages on today’s Sunday trains

October 4, 2015

We were delighted to see 4 carriages (and none of them Pacers) on all today’s services, providing comfortable accommodation for the ever popular Sunday trains.

Let’s hope Northern can keep this up for the run in to Christmas when Sunday trains get notoriously busy.

Autumn timetable starts tomorrow

October 4, 2015

A reminder that the autumn “leaf fall” timetable starts tomorrow (Oct. 5th) and several trains’ time will move a few minutes earlier or later than before – for example the 07.22 becomes 07.19.

One very welcome change is the return to train-operation of the last two evening services from Victoria – since May the 2245 and 2320 departures have been replaced by the dreaded bus substitutions.
