Signalling problems continue tonight

July 30, 2013

Trains have been running again today but continue to be subject to delay.

Network Rail are planning a repeat of last night’s closure with trains after 21.15 being replaced by buses – check National Rail Enquiries if you are planning to travel this evening.

The National Rail page about the problem states:

Over-running engineering works are causing disruption at Atherton.

Because of this, trains between Salford Crescent and Wigan Wallgate may be delayed by up to 20 minutes. These delays will continue for the rest of the day. A normal service is expected to resume from start of service on Wednesday 31 July.

Platform 1 re-opens and the dreaded gap is gone !

July 29, 2013

Great news !

Platform 1 has re-opened today with a smart new red-brick surface and – crucially – the gap between platform and train is much reduced. We await feedback from passengers about whether they feel the reduced gap is small enough, but certainly our impression is that the problem has been solved – a great outcome to a 5 year campaign !

Judging from the recent rate of progress, we can expect Platform 2 to be re-open, also at a raised height, within the next week or so.

Engineering works run over into tonight – no trains after 21.15

July 29, 2013

The old mechanical signals were removed during Sunday’s engineering works and the Walkden line should now fully controlled by electronic signals.

However things have not gone entirely to plan and today’s services have been disrupted as a result. Network Rail now intend to take over the line again tonight to finish the job. A leaflet handed out at Victoria this evening states:

In order for Network Rail to complete the outstanding work, the Atherton route will be closed from 21.15 with all services diverted via Bolton. Replacement road transport will be provided at Manchester Victoria and Wigan Wallgate stations to cover the affected stations.

Network Rail has advised this work will be completed and normal service will be resumed from 06.00 tomorrow morning.

For all of us affected by the delays today, let’s hope that turns out to be correct.

Walkden line re-signalling update

Conversion of the Walkden line to full electronic signalling is nearing completion, with the system due to go live at the end of this month.

As previously noted on this blog, this will entail the closure of the historic signal box and removal of the picturesque mechanical signals, but will deliver a more reliable and efficient railway, and permit more frequent services along the line than are currently possible.

To facilitate final installation works the line will be closed on Sunday 28th July and a bus replacement timetable will operate: the timetable can be downloaded from Northern Rail here.

Going up … Network Rail raise the platform level

Resurfacing work in progress on the Wigan platform at Walkden

Construction work is under way at Walkden to re-surface the uneven platform area beneath the station canopy, and raise the platform level to reduce the gap between platform and trains. This has been a long-standing campaign issue for FOWS and we are delighted it’s finally being tackled.

We understand the work, which is primarily being carried out overnight to avoid disruption to train services, is due to be completed at the end of August and will see the entire platform area covered in the same red-brick surface with tactile edging as already seen on the recently extended section.
