Encouraging news for Sunday service funding

November 6, 2010

GMITA’s Rail and Metrolink Networks Committee have recommended that funding for the Walkden Sunday services should continue beyond May 2011.

The Committee Chair Councillor Doreen Dickinson said “The trial has proved extremely popular with passengers along the line, especially at Atherton and Walkden, allowing residents to travel to Wigan and Manchester Victoria much more easily on Sundays.

“It is hugely encouraging to see that the number of passengers in this first year is meeting forecast demand and is already comparable with established Sunday services across the region.

“Special recognition must go to the joint efforts of the Station Friends Groups at Atherton and Walkden, and to Northern Rail, who have been very supportive of the new service and have worked hard in promoting the service throughout the area.”

The final decision on funding will be made by the Authority’s Policy & Resources Committee at a future meeting, but FOWS are optimistic that funding should be forthcoming for next year.
