A Pacer with an early morning departure from Walkden in the snow

The trains started this week really well, coping with the heavy snowfall much better than the local roads and buses. But today the extreme cold began to take its toll.

This morning trains to Manchester were delayed when a carelessly discarded Christmas tree (!) was left on the line at Swinton … not much the railways can do to avoid that kind of problem.

This evening Trans-Pennine trains were delayed, cancelled, held at stations while brakes were de-frosted, and subject to emergency speed restrictions due to the icy track … and that was just my journey home !

Still, the dedication and determination of Northern and Network Rail staff to keep the stations open and trains running in these exceptional circumstances has been amazing, and I for one salute them !
